Slumdog actress loses home in Mumbai blaze

Rubina watches as her house gets demolished by local authorities in Mumbai, December 30, 2009.

A fire in a Mumbai slum destroyed the one-room shack of “Slumdog Millionaire” child actress Rubina Ali, leaving her family homeless, Rubina said.

The fire also swept through hundreds of tenements late yesteray near railway tracks where Rubina continued to live even after gaining global recognition. Nobody was hurt in the fire.

Rubina, who shot to international fame for her role in Danny Boyle’s Oscar winning 2008 film “Slumdog Millionaire”, said she lost most of her belongings including precious photographs taken during her trip to Los Angeles for the Oscar ceremony.

“We only have a few clothes left, we tried hard to salvage whatever we could before the fire spread. My pictures at the Oscars, all my memories, are all gone,” Rubina said as the rest of the family huddled under one blanket.

Wisps of smoke rose from the slum as Rubina and her family rummaged through the ashes, trying to salvage their possessions.

Rubina was 8-years-old when she played the role of the young Latika in Boyle’s Oscar winning film, and her journey from the slum to the Oscar stage made international headlines.

Boyle had promised that he would provide both her and her co-star Azharuddin houses in Mumbai.

While Azharuddin moved into his new house in July 2009, Rubina is due to move into an apartment within the next couple of months in Bandra, one of Mumbai’s most expensive suburbs, and home many Bollywood stars.

“We have found a flat for them and they will move in, in the next couple of months,” Neerja Mattoo, a member of the “Jai Ho” trust, set up to look after the children’s education and other needs said.

New version of Justin Bieber film to hit theatres

Canadian singer Justin Bieber poses for photographers as he arrives for the premiere of the film ‘‘Justin Bieber: Never Say Never’’, at the O2 Arena in London February 16, 2011

In an unprecedented move, Paramount’s Insurge Pictures will release an updated director’s fan cut of “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” in a one-week exclusive run, beginning February 25.

Director Jon M. Chu’s updated “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never Director’s Fan Cut” will play only in 3D runs in the US and Canada, replacing the original version. There will be 40 minutes of new footage.

Chu has trimmed 30 minutes of footage from the original “Never Say Never” to accommodate the additional scenes. Updated version runs 115 minutes, instead of the original running time of 105 minutes.

Move is designed to whip up renewed interest among Bieber’s diehard fans, and spark repeat viewing in the film’s third weekend in release. “Never Say Never” is already a financial success, having grossed US$51.4 million (RM156.93 million) in its first 11 days in release.

The original “Never Say Never” will continue playing in 2D runs. The cost of a 35mm print makes sending the director’s cut to those theatres financially unworkable. Digital prints, however, are a fraction of the cost.

Paramount vice chairman Rob Moore said the studio is “trying to take advantage of options from digital technology that didn’t exist before and give fans even more of what they loved from the first version.”

As he began the editing process, Chu realised he had a significant amount of footage that he couldn’t use in the initial theatrical release. He then spent dozens of hours on Twitter and Facebook engaging with fans to see what they would like to see.

Some of the new footage includes more of Bieber’s friends and hometown life, as well as new songs and special footage shot of the film’s premiere at theaters across the country.

“I realised I had an embarrassment of riches when I was I in the cutting room,” said Chu. “This cut allows me to retain some of the best scenes from the original movie, while incorporating previously unseen footage and new material I shot during our extensive promotional tour on behalf of the movie. Justin’s dedication to his fan base is unwavering and I was inspired as a filmmaker to attempt to provide them a unique experience that showed even more of his world.”

Paramount has submitted the “Director’s Cut” to the ratings board. Because the studio isn’t asking for a new rating, it doesn’t need to pull “Never Say Never” from theaters pending review by the Classification and Ratings Administration.

Gwyneth Paltrow look superb in bikin in tight slim body.

She advocates all manner of unusual regimes to help her keep in shape, but they certainly seem to be paying off for Gwyneth Paltrow.

The 38-year-old mother of two looked a picture of health as she strolled on a beach in the Caribbean this weekend.

The actress has revealed she uses homemade beauty treatments to maintain her glowing complexion, often slathering herself with a mixture of sugar, ground coffee, oatmeal, honey and olive oil.

She has also followed the Maple Syrup Diet, which involves consuming nothing but maple syrup, cayenne pepper, lemon juice and water.

And she has proclaimed the benefits of a programme which involves giving up orange juice, dairy, alcohol, sugar, wheat, caffeine and processed foods, and eating only one meal a day.

The Oscar-winner has been told to spend more time in the sun after being diagnosed with osteopenia, which can be a precursor to the brittle bone disease osteoporosis.

Miss Paltrow was on holiday with her husband, Coldplay singer Chris Martin, and their children Apple, six, and four-year-old Moses.

She revealed a small ‘C’ tattoo on her abdomen, presumably in honour of her husband.
